As a matter of principle, SIT has never recommended a specific hardware or
operating system platform. We probably never will. However, we do want to alert our clients
and prospective clients to the outstanding results that we’ve seen when using
Red Hat Linux (on a high-end Dell server) with database and middleware applications.
Again, we’re not in the business of recommending
specific platforms, but we believe it is our responsibility to share our
delightful surprise. In tests we've run, the performance has outranked
servers costing ten times as much as the ones we've used.
Your experience may differ,
of course. Also, performance is only one of the many factors
that you should be incorporating into your choice of platform. There
are other important factors, including: reliability, supportability,
training requirements, relationship with your vendor, DRP capability, total cost
of ownership, etc. These should not be discounted.
Red Hat Linux also requires more updates than alternative Unix
servers, which is another "cost of ownership" item to be factored into
your choice of platform.

Admittedly, our larger clients won't be moving to Red Hat Linux anytime soon (because of
their allegiance to their hardware vendors) but we do
want to encourage experimentation and testing because the performance results (on a high-end Dell server) are hard to ignore.
Red Hat is a branded and supported version of Linux. There are many Linux variants out
there—but SIT and our major technology partners only support Red Hat Linux at this time.
